Our Story
Marlborough Street Childcare Centre is owned by the Upper Hutt Child Development Trust. This trust was originally set up in 1991 to ensure that quality childcare services would always be available for children with special needs.
We still welcome children with special needs.
Hours & Availability
The centre is open 7:30am – 5:30pm, Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays and a shutdown period over Christmas/New Year.
Currently the centre is licensed for up to 30 children, including up to 15 under-two-year-olds (we aim to keep the under-2 roll between 6–8). We have separate indoor and outdoor spaces for over and under two-year-olds.
We have two Teacher Only days per year — parents are given at least six weeks’ notice. At all times, there will be at least one qualified staff member on duty.

Our Centre is a special place with a focus on community connection and quality care over profit. Every year we assess the fee structure to ensure we can continue to provide this service.

Our Team
Our teaching team is made up of fully registered and experienced teachers who are passionate about early childhood education. Together, we create a warm, nurturing environment where every child can thrive.
Our Programme
We use Te Whāriki, the New Zealand early childhood curriculum, as a basis for our planning.
We work with whānau to understand the aspirations for each individual child. We create opportunities to explore the interests of children to encourage their learning.
We provide group activities for one-to-one contact and to build relationships with our children. We also go for weekly hikoi (walks) around the neighbourhood to build connections with the natural environment and the community around us.
We operate a transition to school programme for our 4-year-old children. This is blended into the daily rhythms.
Enrolment Information
We welcome applications for enrolment of children aged 3 months to 5 years. Please fill out our waiting list form to apply. As places are only available when another child leaves, waiting list times can be unpredictable — please check back periodically.
Booking fee: On confirmed enrolment, a booking fee is required to secure the space. When your child starts, this becomes their first week of fees. The fee is non-refundable if cancelled.
Hours: Children enrolled in 20 Hours ECE must attend a minimum of 7 hours per enrolled day. Children under 3 must attend a minimum of 6 hours per day. We require a minimum of 3 days per week.
After turning 5: Children who turn 5 while enrolled are welcome to remain until they start school.
Casual attendance: For part-time children, we can sometimes offer additional days when other children are away.
Leaving notice: Families are required to provide at least 4 weeks’ notice that a child will permanently leave the centre.
Join the Management Committee
Our staff and parents work together to operate the Centre. The Centre is administered by Trustees, which delegate authority to a management committee.
Our management committee currently consists of elected parents including two Co-Chairs, as well as the Centre and Office Managers.
We welcome parents and whānau to join the management committee or come along to our monthly meetings. Talk to the Office Manager or the Centre Manager if you’re interested.
Latest ERO Information
Our centre is now under new management, and we have made many quality changes in recent years. We have partnered closely with the Ministry of Education (MOE) to ensure our policies, processes, and environment lead to quality educational outcomes for our learning community.
The result is that MOE are now very satisfied with the position of Marlborough Street Childcare Centre. Please feel free to chat with our management if you have any questions.
